Here's Looking at You Kid

Gregor Aug 12, 2008

This morning the cardiologist said she was doing better than yesterday. His main concern at this point is her PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) which is the duct that runs between the aorta and pulmonary artery to bypass the lungs in utero. Hers has yet to close off. Last night he had mentioned giving her indomethacin to close this off. The concern is that non-oxygenated blood headed to the lungs would pass through the duct and enter the aorta to be distributed elsewhere in the body, which would lead to lower levels of oxygen in the resulting mixed blood.

Part of his concern is based on her looking mottled, but I tried to explain to him that this is a condition known as British, which is generally not fatal.

Anyhow, today he felt she was doing better and is less in a rush to proceed with this stuff, which from our reading could cause its own problems. As far as indoles go, it sounds no where near as much fun as some others I know.

Arrowen got allowed back onto Nicole's boob today, but still had to deal with the nurse manhandling her face into the nipple. When left be she managed to drink, but definitely needed to drink a bit, disengage, swallow, collect her thoughts, and start again. This, however, was not to be tolerated and the nurse kept pushing her back on the nipple. Toward the end I was ready to punch her as poor Arrowen was getting smothered.

After that it was straight back to the incubator as the nurses had gotten a new machine this morning and were a bit preoccupied learning what it did. She got attentive and awake at this point and proceeded to make it known her displeasure with the feeding tube, trying desperately to push it back out with her tongue and throat.

A few new inside incubator shots today...
